Mays of Myth and Legend

The theme for this year’s Spring convention is myth. Myth is distinct from fantasy, or at least modern fantasy as is common in tabletop roleplaying games. Myth is foundational - at its root, it is an attempt to explain an unexplainable phenomenon, at least from the perspective of the tellers of the story. It interweaves the gods and spirits with the natural and political world. How a city was built, how the cosmos was created, who were the heroes of our ancestors; these are common and universal myths of all humanity. But the mythic realm was also a personal one. Tales of brownies and spriggans, changelings and bunyips, miengu and yokai. Folklore is simply myth on that personal level.

Mythic games are distinct from mediaeval fantasy games. Unlike D&D, mythic games eschew the trappings of medievalism for either a more ancient feel - inspired more by the Bronze or Iron Age - or a modernist low fantasy sense. The former can be seen in games like Mythras, Hillfolk, or Agon while the latter is represented by Vaesan, City of Mist, and Scion. The writers of the pulp era like HP Lovecraft and Robert E Howard crafted their own mythic histories that inspire players to this day.

“Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten.” ― Neil Gaiman, Coraline
