IntrigueCon Spring 2023
The Spring
Why do we love the horror genre? Terrifying books and movies allow us to be scared safely. Like a pre-planned panic attack, we experience a rush of adrenaline and dopamine while knowing nothing will happen to us. We can engage our disbelief and put ourselves in the story.
Literature about ghosts and demons is as old as the written word, with stories from Plutarch and Pliny the Younger. The Victorian Era saw the explosion of Gothic horror with Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and Victor Hugo’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The time of pulp fiction hugely influenced horror in roleplaying games. Clark Ashton Smith, Robert W. Chambers, and HP Lovecraft are the heavyweight authors in this regard.
With the growth of self-publishing and small press books, the list of horror RPGs continues to grow. We encourage all GMs to give the horror genre a go this spring and try something new or bring a familiar favourite. So freak your players out with a jump scare or make their skin crawl with some body horror. This spring, IntrigueCon brings you the ultimate in terror.
